Walapone Flood Relief

Walapone Flood Relief

Project Scope

Humanitarian relief

Project Description

In November 2025, the Ditwa storm caused extensive flooding and landslides in Walapone village, Nuwara Eliya. As a result of the disaster, 296 families were displaced and were forced to seek temporary accommodation at the local school. The relief efforts were spearheaded by the students of the University of Jaffna – Arts Faculty, originating from the Central highlands region. UOJAAUK provided the necessary funds to purchase dry rations, which were subsequently distributed to the affected families.

The Gramasevaka of Walapone village played a crucial role, coordinating with the student volunteers to ensure that relief supplies were distributed efficiently and in an orderly manner. This immediate humanitarian response not only supported those isolated from the main town but also offered valuable disaster relief experience to the participating students, particularly in crisis management and navigation during emergencies.
