Improving Mental Health via Yoga, Faculty of Siddha Medicine

Project Proposal

Commemoration of International Yoga Day and benefits of Yoga in human mental and physical health and wellbeing. This is collaborative awareness activities with Faculty of Siddha medicine, University of Jaffna and University of Jaffna Alumni Association United Kingdom (UOJAAUK).

To commemorate the International Yoga Day, UOJAAUK is collaborating with Faculty of Siddha Medicine,
University of Jaffna to create awareness and benefits of yoga in mental and physical health and wellbeing in the local community. As part of the commemoration, there will be presentations by experts in the field from three faculties at different locations in Northern Srilanka.

Presentations includes:

(a)Disease Cure & Yoga

(b) Bharatham & Yoga and

(c) Fitness & Yoga;

In addition, porridge made from indigenous cereal -Kurakkan குரக்கன் will be served to enlighten the attendees that along with Yoga, healthy eating is vital too.

On the 21st of June 2025, there will presentations highlighting the benefits of yoga and healthy eating habits complemented with healthy readily available indigenous food made from cereals such as Varaku வரகு; வரகரிசிச் சசோறும் வழுதுணங்கோயும்.

Project Scope

Sample of five schools from 5 zones, one elderly people’s home and one special needs children home in Northern Srilanka are chosen for this project.

Representing Children population will be from 10th grade from each school.

On the 21st of June 2025, international yoga day will be celebrated with presentations about Yoga and its significance in Mental and physical health & wellbeing and promoting healthy eating by providing a lunch made up of indigenous cereals and vegetables, at Kailasapathy Hall, University of Jaffna, Jaffna, Srilanka.

 

Methodology

5 Zones in Northern Srilanka and one school per zone to be

selected.

An elderly people’s home to be selected in Northern Srilanka.

A special needs children School to be selected in Northern Srilanka

Agree funds (from UoJ and UoJAAUK sponsorship) with detailed budget.

Define activities – promoting Yoga for health and wellbeing and healthy eating using indigenous food

Define the dates of delivery of project per location identified and the delivery team

Deliver and evidence the events Assess the financial outcome and Capture the feedback for further improvements.
